"Animals are fundamentally social creatures. There's hierarchy among carnivores. If you can't become the boss, until you die the stress will continue to pile up. Herbivores face the dilemma of wether or not to sacrifice one of their own in order to survive when attacked by their natural enemy. Something like the "individual" has no benefit for those social creatures...
Then I will choose the path of the BEAR: To never socialize.
Bears are creatures that feel no insecurity in living alone. They're an animal that lives in isolation. Plus, they can hibernate. What a fabulous thing that is. If were to reborn, I definitely want to be a bear."
-Hikigaya Hachiman (Oregairu)
He implies that with social groups there is a choice. One can either be a "carnivore" or "herbivore". "Carnivores" form social hierarchies and those who aren't on top are burdened with failure until they die. On the other hand, "herbivores" must abandon their comrades " or friends" to avoid predators which leads to guilt. He may imply that "herbivores" form groups for specific reasons such as avoiding predators. In either case, forming a group of herbivores only benefits the strongest individuals reliably. Thus, both groups counter-intuitively only benefit the individuals at the top of each respective group. In other words, to an average or below person there is no benefit.
For me the answer is:
"The world won't change, you must change yourself in this world. Now, how will you change yourself? Answer is, you become the god of the new world."
-Hikigaya Hachiman (Oregairu)
and then another option is:
"We only change to avoid the current situation. The true meaning of not running away is planting your feet firmly in the ground and doing the best you can with your present. Who's running away now? Why can't you just accept who you are and who you were?"
-Hikigaya Hachiman (Oregairu)
Bonus Quotes:
"People often say, "If I change myself, I'll change the world." That's a load of crap. People's judgment of others create a stereotype, and that's the impression that lasts. Loners are forced to do things alone. If you try to stand out by working hard at something, you just become a target for attack. It's the rotten rule of the children's kingdom."
-Hikigaya Hachiman (Oregairu)
"Youth is a hoax. It's evil. People who make a big deal of their "youth", are just inviting trouble. They try to keep up with everything going on around them. For them, if there's something that's to do with their "youth", they jump at it without second thought. From normal daily life, to rebelling against the views of society. If you fall in with them, lies, secrets, failure, and even crime await you. But for them, it's just the spice of life. And if failure is also the mark of "youth", then... Isn't it ironic, that a person who has failed to make any friends, is also technically leading his "youth". Though I wonder if they'd agree. Everything runs in their schedule. Then let me be clear. The people who enjoy their "youth", will eventually fall apart."
-Hikigaya Hachiman (Oregairu)
Sorry guys for the emotional loner quotes of this week. I just want to expressed my loner side because I think I really am. Why? I am lonely, either so many people around me or there's no one around. This time I'll post a drawing of mine, illustrating Hachiman want to change the world!
